Preliminary round

August 31, 1966

The preliminary round was held in four runs. The first four athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - qualified for the semi-finals.

In this competition, too, the division of the prelims was very unbalanced. In the second race two runners were eliminated, in the third it was a sprinter who did not reach the next lap. In the first and fourth heats, on the other hand, the participants only had to cross the finish line, regardless of their running time, to be in the semi-finals. For example, the later European Champion Irena Kirszenstein trotted to the finish line fourth and last in the fourth heat and was more than two seconds slower than in the final.
