The women's 200-meter run at the European Athletics Championships in 1969 was held on September 18 and 19, 1969 in the Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens .

In this competition there was a double victory for the sprinters from the GDR. The European champion was Petra Vogt , who had already won the 100-meter run two days earlier and who, after her gold medal, became three-time European champion on the final day with the 4-by-100-meter relay . She won ahead of Renate Meißner . who later rose to become a multiple Olympic champion as Renate Stecher. Bronze went to the British fourth over 100 meters Valerie Peat .

Like over 100 meters , the runners had to struggle with strong headwinds. The existing EM record at these European championships was not set and not improved.

Preliminary round

September 18, 1969, 3 p.m.

The preliminary round was held in four runs. The first four athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - qualified for the semi-finals.

Here, too, there was a questionable division of the races. Two runs were carried out with only four participants each, who qualified for the semifinals just by reaching the goal. In the other two races with six athletes each, however, the athletes had to fight for the semi-finals. Two of them were eliminated from these races.
