The men's decathlon at the 1966 European Athletics Championships was held on August 31 and September 1, 1966 in Budapest's Népstadion .

In this competition there was a triple success for the decathletes from the Federal Republic of Germany. European champion became the EM -Second of 1962 Werner von Moltke . Second place went to Jörg Mattheis . Bronze went to Horst Beyer .

The decathlon was carried out according to the same rules as today. The ten disciplines took place over two days.

A new point table from 1964 was used for scoring.

Preliminary remarks on the point
values : For orientation and classification of the performance, the points achieved in 1985 according to the current evaluation system are also listed. Thereafter, silver and bronze would have been reversed in the medal ranks. From rank ten there would have been further shifts. But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
