The decathlon men at the 1978 European Athletics Championships was on 30 and 31 August 1978 at the Stadium Evžena Rošického of Prague held.
European champion became the European record holder Alexander Grebenjuk from the Soviet Union. The British Daley Thompson took second place . Bronze went to the GDR decathlete Siegfried Stark .

European champion Alexander Grebenjuk improved the championship record on 30./31. August to 8340 points according to the then valid rating from 1964 - today's rating from 1985: 8337 points
execution
The decathlon was carried out according to the same rules as today. The ten disciplines took place over two days.
- Day 1: August 30th - 100 m / long jump / shot put / high jump / 400 m
- Day 2: August 31 - 110 m hurdles / discus throw / pole vault / javelin throw / 1500 m
The scoring was based on the points table from 1964.

Preliminary remarks on the point
values : For orientation and classification of the performance, the points achieved in 1985 according to the current evaluation system are also listed. After that, the seventh placed Johannes Lahti and the eighth placed Rainer Pottel should have swapped their ranks. Also in seventeenth - Armin Tschenett - and eighteen - Christer Lythell - the order would have been reversed. But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
