Yuri Mikhailovich Kuzenko

Juri Michailowitsch Kuzenko ( Russian Юрий Михайлович Куценко , English transcription Yuriy Kutsenko ; born March 5, 1952 in Tawrovo, Belgorod Oblast ; † May 22, 2018 ) was a Soviet decathlete .

Athletic career

It wasn't until 1975 that he started the decathlon. In 1978 he was second behind Alexander Grebenjuk in the Soviet championship. At the European Championships in Prague in 1978 he was fifth, ten points behind fourth Sepp Zeilbauer , but 230 points behind third Siegfried Stark . 1979 Kuzenko was third in the Soviet championship. In the final of the European Cup of all-rounders he came fourth, the Soviet team took third place behind the GDR and the FRG.

In 1980, Kuzenko won his only Soviet championship. At the Olympic Games in Moscow he caught up on day two and was the best athlete in the pole vault and over 1500 meters. With that he won silver behind Daley Thompson with 8331 points (8369 points according to the valuation valid since 1985) ahead of his compatriot Sergei Schelanow . 1982 Kuzenko was ninth in the Soviet championship. In 1984 he finished third in the Soviet championship with a personal best. Because of the Olympic boycott of the Soviet Union, he could not take part in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Yuri Kuzenko was 1.90 m tall and weighed 93 kg during his playing days.
