The 400-meter hurdles of the men at the 1978 European Athletics Championships was from August 29 to September 1, 1978 in the stadium Evžena Rošického of Prague held.

With silver and bronze, the runners from the Soviet Union won two medals in this competition. European champion was Harald Schmid from the Federal Republic of Germany. He won ahead of Dimitri Stukalow . Third place went to Wassyl Archypenko .
