José Alonso (athlete)

José Alonso ( José Alonso Valero ; born February 12, 1957 in El Vendrell ) is a former Spanish sprinter and hurdler .

In the 400 m hurdles he was national champion ten times (1977, 1978, 1980, 1984-1990). At the European Athletics Championships in Prague in 1978 , he was seventh. In 1983, 1986 and 1988 he won gold at the Ibero-American Championship, 1983 and 1987 at the Mediterranean Games . At the World Athletics Championships in 1983 he reached the semifinals, at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles he was eliminated in the preliminary stages, and at the European Championships in 1986 in Stuttgart he was sixth. In 1987 he finished eighth at the World Championships in Rome , and the following year he reached the semifinals at the Olympic Games in Seoul . At the European Championships in Split in 1990 , he was seventh.

In the 400-meter run , he was four times Spanish indoor champion (1985, 1987, 1988, 1990). At the European Athletics Indoor Championships he won bronze in this discipline in Piraeus in 1985 and in Madrid in 1986 .

After his sporting career, he worked as a manager for various Spanish and Moroccan athletes. In December 2010, he was arrested in a raid in the wake of the Fuentes doping scandal, together with his clients Marta Domínguez and Alberto García , the sports doctor Eufemiano Fuentes and ten other people on suspicion of trafficking in doping drugs .
