The men's 400-meter hurdles at the European Athletics Championships in 1986 took place from August 26th to 28th, 1986 in the Neckar Stadium in Stuttgart .

The Federal German vice world champion from 1983 and Olympic third from 1984 Harald Schmid won his third European Championship title in a row . Second place went to the Soviet runner Alexander Wassiljew . The Swede Sven Nylander won bronze.
