The men's 4 x 100 meter relay at the European Athletics Championships in 1986 was held on August 30 and 31, 1986 in the Neckar Stadium in Stuttgart .
The European champion was the Soviet Union in the line-up of Alexander Evgenev ( only used in the final ), Nikolai Yuschmanow , Vladimir Muravyov and Viktor Bryshin as well as Andrei Schljapnikow, who was also used in the run-up . Second place went to the GDR with Thomas Schröder , Steffen Bringmann , Olaf Prenzler and Frank Emmelmann . Bronze went to Great Britain ( Elliot Bunney , Daley Thompson , Mike McFarlane , Linford Christie ).
The runner used in the preliminary runs for the Soviet Union also received a gold medal. The championship record, on the other hand, has now been awarded to the four runners from the final.

Record improvement
The victorious season from the Soviet Union improved the existing EM record in the final on August 31 with the line-up of Alexander Evgenev , Nikolai Yuschmanow , Vladimir Muravyov and Viktor Bryshin by 29 hundredths of a second to 38.29 seconds.
Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in two runs. The first three seasons per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the two fastest seasons - highlighted in light green - qualified for the final. Of the nine competing teams, only one did not reach the final.
