The women's 400-meter hurdles at the European Athletics Championships in 1986 took place from August 28 to 30, 1986 in the Neckar Stadium in Stuttgart .

In this competition there were two medals, silver and bronze, for the runners from the GDR. Marina Stepanova from the Soviet Union, who set a new world record in the final , became the European champion . Second place went to the previous world record holder Sabine Busch . Bronze went to Cornelia Feuerbach .
