The women's 400-meter run at the European Athletics Championships in 1986 was held from August 26th to 28th, 1986 in the Neckar Stadium in Stuttgart .

With gold and bronze, the GDR runners won two medals in this competition. Their third EM -Titel consecutive Olympic champion secured in 1980 , World Record owner and reigning 200 meters - world champion Marita Koch . Second place went to Olha Wladykina from the Soviet Union. Bronze went to Petra Müller .
