The women's 400-meter run at the 1990 European Athletics Championships was held from August 27 to 29, 1990 in the Poljud stadium in Split .

The runners from the GDR achieved a double victory in this competition. European champion was Grit Breuer . She won ahead of Petra Schersing , under her previous name Petra Müller, European Championship third in 1986 , World Cup second in 1987 and Olympic second in 1988 . Bronze went to Marie-José Pérec from France .
