The men's 400-meter run at the 1990 European Athletics Championships was held from August 28 to 30, 1990 in the Poljud Stadium in Split .

In this competition, the runners from the GDR won two medals, silver and bronze. The British defending champion Roger Black became European champion . The 1987 world champion and European record holder , Thomas Schönlebe , came second like in 1986 . Bronze went to Jens Carlowitz .
