doping

There was a doping case in this discipline. The Soviet shot putter Vyacheslav Lycho , who had initially won the bronze medal, was convicted of taking pseudoephedrine . The medal was revoked and he was banned for three months. As for the sporting part, this had a serious impact on three athletes:

  • Pole Helmut Krieger would have been eligible to participate in the finals as twelfth overall of the two qualifying groups, but had to watch.
  • The German Karsten Stolz would have had three more attempts as eighth placed shot putter in the final.
  • The Norwegian Georg Andersen did not receive his well-deserved bronze medal at the subsequent award ceremony, but only after the European Championships were long over.
