Paul Edwards (athlete)

Paul Edwards ( Paul Michael Edwards; born February 16, 1959 in Chiswick ) is a former British shot putter .

Career

At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, he was eliminated in qualification.

In 1990 he won bronze for Wales at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland . At the European Athletics Championships in Split , he failed in the preliminary round.

In 1991 he was tenth at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Seville and at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo .

The following year he was eighth at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Genoa in 1992 . At the Olympic Games in Barcelona he did not get past the first round, and at the World Athletics Cup in Havana he was fifth.

In 1993 he finished ninth at the World Indoor Championships in Toronto and was eliminated from qualifying at the World Championships in Stuttgart .

The 1994 European Championships in Helsinki tested positive for anabolic steroids , which were also detected in a further doping sample taken a few days later . He was banned for four years because of this doping rule violation . Edwards claimed that a bottle of shampoo he accidentally drank caused this result. After he tested positive for testosterone before the ban expired in 1997 , he was banned from competitions for life. A 2013 lawsuit, in which Edwards alleged irregularities in this test, was dismissed on the basis of statute of limitations.

In the shot put he was five times English champion (1987, 1990-1992, 1994), six times English indoor champion (1988, 1990-1994) and five times British champion (1989-1993). He was five times Welsh champion in the shot put (1986-1990), three times in the discus throw (1986, 1988, 1990) and once in the decathlon (1981).
