The shot put men at the 2016 European Athletics Championships was on 9 and 10 July 2016 in the Olympic Stadium of the Dutch capital Amsterdam discharged.

The German David Storl won his third European Championship title in a row . He had previously Olympic silver in 2012 won, was twice world champion ( 2011 / 2013 ) and in 2015 became vice world champion. The second rank occupied the poles MichaĹ Haratyk . Bronze went to the Portuguese Tsanko Arnaudov .

doping

In this competition there was a doping case that resulted in subsequent disqualification.

The doping test of the Romanian Andrei Toader , who initially placed sixth, on May 10, 2016, published in June 2016, contained the prohibited substance testosterone and was therefore positive. The athlete has been stripped of the results he has achieved since then, including his result from these European championships. Due to the four-year ban from May 10, 2016 to May 9, 2020, he had to give up his originally planned participation in the 2016 Olympic Games .

29 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 20.30 m. Five athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the next seven athletes, including the doping fraudster from Romania, to twelve shot putters (highlighted in light green). So finally 19.72 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
