Athletic career

Georgi Ivanov gained his first international experience in 2001 at the World Youth Championships in Debrecen , where he won the gold medal with a width of 19.73 m with the 5 kg ball. The following year he took part in the Junior World Championships in Kingston , but retired there with the 6 kg ball with 17.12 m in the qualification. In 2003 he won the bronze medal at the Junior European Championships in Tampere with 19.94 m and won the following year at the Junior World Championships in Grosseto with 20.70 m. In 2005 he was fourth at the U23 European Championships in Erfurt with 19.51 m, as well as two years later at the U23 European Championships in Debrecen with 19.02 m. In 2008 he took part in the Olympic Games in Beijing for the first time, but retired there without a valid attempt in qualification . In 2009, too, at the World Championships in Berlin, 18.11 m was not enough to reach the final.

In 2010 he was eliminated at the European Championships in Barcelona with 18.28 m in qualification and the following year he again failed to make a valid attempt at the European Indoor Championships in Paris . In 2012 he retired at the European Championships in Helsinki with 19.14 m in qualification and again took part in the Olympic Games in London , where 19.63 m were not enough for a final . At the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 2013 in Gothenburg he was eliminated with 19.52 m in qualification, but reached the final at the World Championships in Moscow in August , in which he came eighth with a width of 20.39 m. The following year he was fifth at the World Indoor Championships in Sopot with a new Polish indoor record of 21.02 m and also reached the final at the European Championships in Zurich in the summer , in which he failed to make a valid attempt. In 2015 he was eliminated at the European Indoor Championships in Prague with 19.95 m in qualification and at the World Championships in Beijing he did not succeed in qualifying , but subsequently won the bronze medal at the Military World Games in Mungyeon, South Korea, with 19.37 m the Brazilian Darlan Romani and Bob Bertemes from Luxembourg.

2016 he succeeded at the European Championships in Amsterdam not a valid attempt in qualifying once again and then he left even in his third Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro with 19.49 meters in the qualifying from, as well as in the European Athletics Indoor Championships 2017 in Belgrade with 18.94 m. In 2018, 19.40 m at the European Championships in Berlin was not enough for a final. In 2019 he again took part in the World Military Games in Wuhan , where he finished 14th with 17.77 m.

From 2007 to 2009, 2011 and 2012, and from 2015 to 2019, Ivanov was the Bulgarian champion in outdoor shot put and from 2007 to 2017 and 2019 also indoors.
