The fifth Athletics U23 Championships were to 17 July 2005 of 14 Steigerwaldstadion of Erfurt , the state capital of the German Free State of Thuringia , held.

811 athletes (465 male, 346 female) from 41 countries took part. The German Athletics Association (DLV) sent 78 athletes (37 female, 41 male).

22 nations won at least one medal, and in the points assessment the German team was in 2nd place with 251 points, ahead of France with 136 points and behind the Russian team with 270 points.
