Ásdís Hjálmsdóttir (born October 28, 1985 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic javelin thrower .

In addition to her athletic career, she studied pharmacy. She received her PhD in immunology from the University of Zurich in 2018 .

Athletic career

Her first international tournament she played in 2001 when she took part in the World Youth Championships in Debrecen , where she reached 14th place. In 2003 she finished 19th at the Junior European Championships . A year later, she finished sixth in the final of the Junior World Championships in Grosseto . In 2005 she won two gold and one bronze medals at the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE). In addition, she just missed another medal in fourth place at the U23 European Championships .

In 2006 she qualified for the first time for participation in the European Championships in Gothenburg , where she was eliminated in the qualification. In 2007 she won another medal at the GSSE. In 2008 she qualified for the Olympic Games in Beijing , where she was eliminated as the 50th qualifier. In 2009 she set a new championship record at the Small States Games and secured the gold medal. Also at her first World Championships in Berlin in August, she was eliminated in the preliminary round. In 2010 she finished tenth at the European Championships .

In 2011 she missed the finals at the World Championships in Daegu , as well as at the European Championships in Helsinki in 2012 . She finished the Olympic Games in London in eleventh place. In the qualification she also set the current Icelandic national record in javelin throw. A year later she was eliminated from qualifying at the World Championships in Moscow , as well as at the World Championships in Beijing two years later.

In 2016 she finished eighth at the European Championships in Amsterdam with 60.37 m. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , however, she was eliminated again in the qualification. In July 2017, she improved her national record in javelin throwing to over 63 meters and thus qualified again for the World Championships in London . There she reached the final with 63.06 m and was eleventh with 60.16 m . The following year she took part again in the European Championships in Berlin , but was eliminated there with 58.64 m in the qualification.

So far she has been Icelandic outdoor champion 13 times in various throwing disciplines and indoor champion in the shot put three times.
