Teemu Sakari Wirkkala (born January 14, 1984 ) is a Finnish javelin thrower . Wirkkala's best distance is 87.23 meters, set up on July 22nd, 2009 in Joensuu .

In 2003 Teemu Wirkkala became European Junior Champion with a throw of 79.90 meters in Tampere . At this point his best throws were already over 80 meters. It wasn't until 2006 that the young Wirkkala improved and took part in the European Championships in Gothenburg , where he finished sixth. At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka , Wirkkala fell short of his expectations with a throw of 78.01 meters and was only twelfth. Three weeks later, Wirkkala reached fifth place at the World Athletics Finals in Stuttgart . His compatriot Tero Pitkämäki had won the competition. In Finland he has strong competitors with Pitkämäki and Tero Järvenpää . At the 2008 Olympic Games , he reached fifth place.

Wirkkala is 1.85 m tall and has a competition weight of 78 kg.
