Willi Mathiszik (born June 17, 1984 in Rostock ) is a former German athlete. His specialty was the 110 meter hurdles .

Life

Mathiszik came to athletics through a talent search and attended the sports high school in Rostock. In 2003 he became German youth champion over 60 meters hurdles and qualified in the same year for the U20 European Championships in Tampere . In 2005 he became the German Junior Champion in his hometown. In the same year he achieved his hitherto greatest success by winning the silver medal at the U23 European Championships .

Mathiszik first appearance in the jersey of the German national team, he completed in 2008 at the World Indoor Championships in Valencia , where he reached the semi-finals. A year later came 9th place at the 2009 European Indoor Championships in Turin .

In his career Willi Mathiszik started for the SC Empor Rostock , later 1st LAV Rostock, the LAZ Leipzig . His trainers were Dagmar Thoms and Peter Schörling in Rostock and Cheick-Idriss Gonschinska in Leipzig. From 2010 he started for TV Wattenscheid 01 . In his first season for the club from Bochum he injured himself and was unable to take part in the European championships despite having fulfilled the qualification standard. After recovering from healing, Mathiszik was able to start again in 2011 and was nominated for the World Championships by the German Athletics Association . In Daegu , South Korea , he qualified for the semifinals after a run against former Olympic and world champion Liu Xiang by finishing eighth.

After repeated serious back injuries that made him miss the London 2012 Olympics, and a serious training accident, Mathiszik retired in late 2013.

He completed a diploma course as a trainer at the DLV and at the trainer academy of the DOSB in Cologne in 2018 and was active as a technical trainer for the hurdlers Alexander John and Erik Balnuweit . Since February 2016 he has been responsible for the sprint / hurdle area at the Berlin Athletics Association as a state trainer. He mentions his former coaches Cheick-Idriss Gonschinska and the American Brooks Johnson as his mentors . Since May 2017 he has also been responsible for the coordination of the federal piece point in Berlin for the DLV.

As a coach, he was also able to record some successes in the hurdles. His athletes include the German U23 champion Vanessa Hammerschmidt , the U18 European champion Gisele Wender . and the German U16 champion Gavin Claypool .

Willi Mathiszik has been married to Kitty Mathiszik since 2010. They have a daughter together and live in Potsdam- Fahrland .

Trivia

Willi Mathiszik set German records in two different disciplines in one day. He succeeded in doing this on December 21, 2001 in a competition in Neubrandenburg , where he ran over 60 meter hurdles in 7.83 s and over 200 meters in 21.59 s records for the U18 age group.
