controversy

Before the World Championships in Berlin in 2009, Harting advocated the restricted release of doping substances. During the world championships, Harting was critical of an action by doping victims in the GDR . Part of this action was the distribution of cardboard glasses to the audience in order to draw attention to the further secret abuse of forbidden means. Harting commented on this: "When the discus comes up, it should jump against the glasses so that they really can't see anything." The statement was sharply criticized both by the German Athletics Association and by the public. However, DLV Vice President Eike Emrich made the following statement in a statement: “With the request for indulgence, Robert Harting states that the tension in the qualification competition continued to have an effect and led to unacceptable comments. This was intensified by the fact that discussions about the doping problem in the past had repeatedly disturbed his concentration on the preparation. ”With his comments, Robert Harting alluded to the criticism of his trainer Werner Goldmann , who was associated with doping in GDR times .

In January 2015, he was critical of the work of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and complained about the imbalance in the global fight against doping.
