Martin John Sheridan (born March 28, 1881 in Bohola , County Mayo , Ireland , † March 27, 1918 in New York City ) was an American athlete .

Sheridan came to the United States from his native Ireland in 1897 at the age of 16 , where he joined the New York Police Department . He won the gold medal in the discus throw at the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis . He was able to repeat the success four years later at the games in London . In London he also won gold in the "classic style discus throw" and bronze in the long jump from standing .

However, he was even more successful at the so-called interludes in Athens in 1906 . There he won the competitions in the shot put and discus throw and came second in the high jump from standing , long jump from standing and in weight throwing . He died at the age of 36 years at a pneumonia . In 1988 he was posthumously inducted into the "Hall of Fame" of the US Athletics Federation.
