Hans-Joachim Klein (born August 20, 1942 in Darmstadt ) was President of the German Olympic Society and world-class swimmer.

Life

Klein attended the Alte Realgymnasium (today: Georg Büchner School ) in Darmstadt. Since 1955 he was in the Darmstadt swimming club in 1912 . From 1958 Klein was trained by the Hungarian master coach Janos Satori (1931-2014). From 1959 to 1965, Klein won numerous German championships and set several world records. In 1960 he took part in the Olympic Games in Rome . In 1964 he won three silver medals (4 × 100 m individual medley and freestyle, 4 × 200 m freestyle) and a bronze medal (100 m freestyle) at the Olympic Games in Tokyo . In 1965 he was voted Sportsman of the Year . From October 2001 to November 2007 he was President of the DOG .

From 1962 to 1963, Klein studied industrial engineering at the University of Southern California . From 1963 to 1969 he studied industrial engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt . In 1972 he graduated as Dr. rer. pole. From 1969 to 1985 he worked at the Hessian Ministry of Transport and Economics. From 1985 to 1997 he was district administrator in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district . From 1997 until his retirement on March 31, 2008 he was chairman of the management board of LVV Leipziger Versorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH .

From 2010 to 2016, Hans Joachim Klein was the chairman of the Heinerfestverein in Darmstadt. The Heinerfest is one of the largest street festivals in Germany.
