German sports lottery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Sports Lottery is a project that was started by Robert Harting , Gerald Wagener and Torsten Toeller . The project was presented to the public in October 2013. The gaming license was granted at the beginning of June 2014. The non-profit German Sports Lottery started its gaming operations on February 13, 2015. In January 2016, Lotto Hessen became the new majority shareholder by taking over the shares of Gerald Wagener. Lotto Hessen holds 77.3% of the German Sports Lottery.

The idea behind the sports lottery

The sports lottery is an initiative designed to support German amateur athletes who are preparing for Olympic and Paralympic games . The sports lottery is not a classic number lottery. The sports lottery is based on a different game principle, and the proceeds are entirely dedicated to a good cause, in this case to supporting top German athletes. According to one of the initiators, Robert Harting, the Olympic champion in the discus throw and athlete of the year 2012, 2013 and 2014, better sports funding is urgently needed in Germany, as the number of athletes doubled after reunification, but at the same time the medal table is not increased. At present, normal A-team athletes receive a monthly allowance of 300 euros from Deutsche Sporthilfe . The sports lottery plans to increase this amount to 1000 euros so that the athletes can concentrate mainly on the sport for a certain time without worrying about their existence. At the same time, the National Anti-Doping Agency is to be supported and popular sports to be subsidized.

How the sports lottery works

The sports lottery is about predicting a seven-digit winning number. The winning number can be correct from left or right. You win with just one correct number. There are 28 prize classes in total. On November 4, 2016, the current game formula replaced the previously applicable game formula consisting of Olympic colors, winter and summer sports and medal combinations. It was seen by the game participants as too complicated and therefore simplified as part of a relaunch. At the same time, the maximum profit rose to one million euros. A lot costs either 1 Euro, 2.50 Euro or 5 Euro plus processing fee. The maximum win depends on the stake.

Detailed information on the exact procedure of the drawing process can be found on the help page of the German Sports Lottery.

Starting shot of the sports lottery

In its meeting on June 4, 2014, the Gambling College approved the granting of a license for the German Sports Lottery. Game operations began in February 2015.

Distribution of the proceeds

The idea behind the lottery is to promote Olympic and Paralympic amateur athletes. For example, 30 cents each 1 euro should go to the athletes and NADA, 31 cents will be distributed as profits. 17% is paid as taxes and 22% is retained for actual costs such as transaction fees, advertising, operating costs, partner programs, commissions for clubs and sponsorships.

Who is financially supported?

The focus of funding is on Olympic and Paralympic sports. In addition, the NADA foundation ( National Anti-Doping Agency Germany ) is to be supported in its work against doping in competitive sports. Funding is also planned for popular sport , but the role model role of top athletes in popular sport is mainly seen as the first support measure.

The non-profit German Sports Lottery has set itself the goal of bringing German athletes forward in the Olympic Games and other international competitions. The motto "We make winners and winners" expresses the fact that everyone can participate in the success of top German athletes and thereby has the chance of winning.

The role model

The idea for the project came about at the Olympic Games in London . In the UK, athletes have been funded by the National Lottery since the 1990s . Observers attribute Great Britain's good performance at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London to financial support from top athletes.

criticism

The German Olympic Sports Federation has expressed after the announcement of the planned sports lottery concerns about the idea. The federal government initially feared a redistribution that would not serve sport in any way, as no further funds would be available to promote sport. The sports lottery and DOSB are now in constructive discussions and want to work more closely together in the future.
