Hamza Alić (born January 20, 1979 in Srebrenica ) is a Bosnian shot putter .

Athletic career

Hamza Alić gained his first international experience at the Junior European Championships in Ljubljana in 1997 , where he was eliminated with 14.29 m in qualification, as well as at the Junior World Championships in Annecy the following year. In 2002 he took part in the European Championships in Munich for the first time and was unable to qualify for the final there with 17.29 m. In 2005 he won the bronze medal at the Mediterranean Games in Almería with 19.49 m behind the Croatian Edis Elkasević and Manuel Martínez from Spain. He qualified for the World Championships in Helsinki , where he was eliminated with 18.77 m in the first round. The following year he retired from both the World Indoor Championships in Moscow with 18.42 m, and the European Championships in Gothenburg with 18.15 m in qualification. At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka , he failed to make a valid attempt.

In 2008 he again took part in the World Indoor Championships in Valencia and did not reach the final with 20.00 m, as did the Olympic Games in Beijing with 19.87 m . He also failed in qualifying at the 2009 European Indoor Championships in Turin with 19.41 m, but then won the silver medal at the Mediterranean Games in Pescara with 20.05 m . He qualified again for the World Championships in Berlin , where he was seventh with 20.00 m. Two years later, he retired again both at the European Indoor Championships in Paris with 19.60 m, and at the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, with 19.70 m in qualification. Even at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in 2012 in Istanbul and the European Championships in Helsinki, he did not make it to the final. In 2013 he won the silver medal behind the Serb Asmir Kolašinac at the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg with 20.34 m . He also won the bronze medal at the Mediterranean Games in Mersin with 19.69 m, while he was eliminated from the qualification at the World Championships in Moscow with 19.18 m.

In 2014 he was eliminated in the first round with 19.36 m at the European Championships in Zurich and at the European Athletics Indoor Championships 2015 in Prague , he failed to make a valid attempt. He then won the first ever European Games in Baku with a width of 20.26 m and was eliminated from the qualification at the World Championships in Beijing with 18.62 m . The following year he was unable to qualify for the final with 19.48 m both at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam in 2016 and at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . At the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London , he was eliminated with 18.95 m in qualification . In 2018 he won the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona with 20.43 m and failed at the European Championships in Berlin with 19.34 m in the first round.

In 2004 and 2005 as well as in 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2018, Alić became the Bosnian champion in the shot put.
