doping

There were two subsequent disqualifications due to doping in this competition:

  • The Italian Jamel Chatbi , who also competed for Morocco at times , was first in fifth place. He was also at the start over 5000 meters and was eleventh there. Chatbi tested positive for the banned drug Clenbuterol during a training check during the 2016 Olympic Games after he had originally qualified for the final over the 3000 meter obstacle . For Chatbi it was already his second positive result for the banned substance after 2009. The new findings initially led to a ban for two years and eight months until April 2019. However, because of the second offense, the Italian anti-doping agency NADO italia extended the period of this ban in 2017. The athlete was banned from starting for another five years and four months until August 2024.
  • The Turk Hakan Duvar , who originally took twelfth place, was found to have deviations in his biological passport , which led to a four-year ban and, among other things, the cancellation of the result at these European championships. The suspension began on December 26, 2016 and ends on December 25, 2020.

The main victims were two runners who would have been entitled to participate in the final over their time:

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in two runs. The first five athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - and the five fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the final.
