Gregory Studerus

Gregory J. Studerus (born March 31, 1948 in West Orange , New Jersey ) is an American Roman Catholic clergyman and auxiliary bishop in Newark .

Life

Gregory Studerus initially studied art education and worked as an art teacher at a public elementary school. During this time he also served in the National Guard in the state of New Jersey. In 1976 he began his studies at the Seminary in South Orange . On May 31, 1980, he received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Newark .

After being ordained a priest, he worked in pastoral care and as dean . From 1991 to 1994 he was a member of the priestly council of the archdiocese. On March 31, 2005 he received the honorary title of Pontifical Honorary Chaplain ( Monsignor ). Since 2015 he has been Episcopal Vicar for Hudson County and a member of the College of Consultors for the Archdiocese of Newark.

Pope Francis appointed him Auxiliary Bishop in Newark and Titular Bishop of Tarasa in Byzacena on February 27, 2020 . The Archbishop of Newark, Joseph William Cardinal Tobin CSsR , donated him and the auxiliary bishops Elias Lorenzo OSB and Michael Saporito, who were appointed with him, episcopal ordination on June 30 of the same year . Co-consecrators were Auxiliary Bishop Manuel A. Cruz and Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus John Walter Flesey from Newark.
