Elias Richard G. Lorenzo OSB (born October 6, 1960 in Brooklyn ) is an American Roman Catholic religious , abbot praeses and auxiliary bishop in Newark .

Life

Elias Lorenzo attended the church preparatory seminar in Brooklyn and graduated in 1982 with a degree in philosophy from Don Bosco College Seminary in Newton , New Jersey . In 1983 he entered the Benedictine Abbey of St. Mary in Morristown , where he made his first profession in 1985 and solemn profession in 1988 . On June 24, 1989, he received the sacrament of ordination .

After his ordination he worked, among other things, as a teacher and headmaster. From 1995 to 2002 he was prior of his convent and until 2009 rector of the monastery church. In the diocese of Paterson he was chairman of the liturgy commission from 1991 to 2000. In the Diocese of Metuchen , he was from 2005 to 2009 Episcopal Vicar for Religious. He then went to Rome, where he was Prior of the Primate Abbey of Sant'Anselmo and Procurator General of the American-Cassinese Benedictine Congregation . In 2016 he became Abbot President of the Congregation.

Pope Francis appointed him auxiliary bishop in Newark and titular bishop of Tabuda on February 27, 2020 . The Archbishop of Newark, Joseph William Cardinal Tobin CSsR , donated him and the auxiliary bishops Gregory Studerus and Michael Saporito, who were appointed with him, episcopal ordination on June 30 of the same year . Co-consecrators were Auxiliary Bishop Manuel A. Cruz and Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus John Walter Flesey from Newark.
