Joseph William Cardinal Tobin CSsR (born May 3, 1952 in Detroit , USA ) is an American clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Newark .

Life

Joseph William Tobin resigned after his school days of the Congregation of the Redemptorists in and laid on August 5, 1972, the temporal vows from. In 1975 he acquired at Holy Redeemer College in Waterford , the baccalaureate in professional philosophy . Tobin made perpetual vows on August 21, 1976 . Joseph William Tobin earned a Masters in Religious Education in 1977 . He received on 1 June 1978, the sacrament of Holy Orders . In 1979 Tobin earned a Masters in Pastoral Theology from Mount Saint Alphonsus Major Seminary in Esopus .

From 1979 to 1984 Joseph William Tobin was Parish Vicar of the Holy Redeemer Parish in Detroit and from 1984 to 1990 he was the pastor of the same parish. Tobin was also Episcopal Vicar of the Archdiocese of Detroit from 1980 to 1986 and an employee of the Diocesan Court . He was pastor of the Saint Alphonsus Parish in Chicago from 1990 to 1991 . In 1991 Joseph William Tobin became Consultor General of the Redemptorists and on September 9, 1997, Superior General of the Redemptorists. He was confirmed in this office on September 26, 2003. In 2003 Tobin also became Vice President of the Union of Superiors General. Joseph William Tobin was a member of the Council for Relations between the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life and the International Union of Superiors General from 2001 to 2009 . Tobin's term as Superior General of the Redemptorists ended on November 4, 2009. Pope Benedict XVI. appointed him Apostolic Visitor to the Religious in Ireland on May 31, 2010 .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him titular archbishop of Obba on August 2, 2010, and appointed him secretary of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life . He was ordained bishop on October 9, 2010 by Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone SDB in St. Peter's Basilica ; Co- consecrators were the Cardinal Vicar for the Diocese of Rome , Cardinal Agostino Vallini , and the Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and for Societies of Apostolic Life, Cardinal Franc Rodé CM .

On October 18, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Archbishop of Indianapolis . The ceremonial inauguration ( enthronement ) took place on December 3 of the same year.

Pope Francis appointed Tobin Archbishop of Newark on November 7, 2016 .

Shortly after his appointment as Archbishop of Newark, Pope Francis accepted him into the College of Cardinals in the consistory of November 19, 2016 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria delle Grazie a Via Trionfale . His inauguration as Archbishop of Newark took place on January 6, 2017.

On June 6, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Congregation for Catholic Education . On November 11, 2019, the Pope appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture . On July 4, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity .
