Günter Pilz

Günter Pilz (born March 19, 1945 in Bad Hall , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian mathematician. He is Professor of Mathematics at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz . He heads the Institute for Algebra .

Life

After studying mathematics and physics at the University of Vienna (1963–1967) and receiving his doctorate as Dr. phil. (1967) Günter Pilz held various assistant positions: research assistant and university assistant at the Institute for Mathematics at the University of Vienna (1966–1968), assistant at the Institute for Statistics at the Technical University of Vienna (1968–1969), research assistant at the Department of Mathematics , University of Arizona , USA (1969–1970) and assistant at the Institute for Mathematics at the University of Linz (1970–1974). His habilitation took place in 1971. In 1974 he was appointed professor of mathematics at the JKU. Before he was appointed director of the Institute for Algebra in 1996, he headed the Institute for Mathematics (1980–1983 and 1987–1993).

From 1996 to 2000, Pilz was Dean of Studies at the Faculty of Science and Technology , and from 2000 to 2007 Vice Rector for Research. He was also the chairman of the Research Forum of the Austrian Rectors' Conference (2001–2005) and was elected Austrian delegate for “honesty in research” at the OECD (2003). His field of work is algebraic structures in theory and applications. He is an honorary professor at Shandong Univ. of Technology in China and an honorary doctorate from the Gorky State University of the Urals in Yekaterinburg , Russia. He was also a member of the Council for Research and Technology for Upper Austria (2003–2008).

Main focus of work and research

  • Theory and application of Fastringen , that is, of collections of things "that you can calculate with almost as well as with numbers". These fast rings have numerous uses, e.g. B. in the creation of optimal statistical test plans.
