John Joseph Myers (born July 26, 1941 in Ottawa , Illinois , USA ) is an American clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Newark .

Life

John J. Myers received in 1966 in St. Peter's Basilica by Bishop Francis Frederick Reh , rector of the Pontifical North American College , the sacrament of Holy Orders . He studied Catholic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University and received his 1967 licentiate in theology. In 1977 he was at the Catholic University of America after completing a dissertation on The Trullan Controversy. Conclusions for the status of the Orthodox Churches in the Canon Law of the Roman Catholic Church for Dr. iur. can. PhD .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Coadjutor Bishop of Peoria on July 7, 1987 . The episcopal ordination donated him on September 3, 1987 Edward William O'Rourke , Bishop of Peoria; Co- consecrators were Thomas Cajetan Kelly , Archbishop of Louisville , and Donald William Wuerl , then Auxiliary Bishop in Seattle . With the resignation of Bishop O'Rourke, he followed this on January 23, 1990 as Bishop of Peoria.

On July 24, 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Newark and Superior of the Mission sui juris of the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Antilles .

On September 24, 2013, Pope Francis appointed Bishop Bernard Hebda as coadjutor with the right of succession. This appointment was seen as a quick response from the Vatican to increasing criticism of Myers' lack of supervision in several abuse cases. In March, the Pope named Hebda Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis without appointing another Newark coadjutor.

Pope Francis accepted Myers' age-related resignation on November 7, 2016.

Positions

In October 2012, Myers called for Catholics, particularly politicians who advocate gay marriage , to abstain from communion because they would deviate from the line of the Church.
