Agostino Cardinal Vallini (born April 17, 1940 in Poli , Province of Rome , Italy ) is Cardinal Vicar Emeritus of the Diocese of Rome and Archpriest of the Lateran Basilica .

Life

Agostino Vallini grew up in the Neapolitan district of Barra . After studying Catholic theology , he received the sacrament of ordination on July 19, 1964 in Naples from Archbishop Alfonso Cardinal Castaldo . Vallini taught at the Faculty of Theology of Southern Italy church law and worked at the Archbishop's Seminary of Naples, where he was also rector.

Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness on May 16, 1980 and appointed him Titular Bishop of Tortibulum and Auxiliary Bishop in Naples on March 23, 1989 . He was ordained bishop on May 13, 1989 by Michele Cardinal Giordano , Archbishop of Naples; Co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Capua , Luigi Diligenza , and the Archbishop of Spoleto-Norcia , Antonio Ambrosanio .

On November 13, 1999, John Paul II appointed him Diocesan Bishop of Albano and on May 27, 2004, Prefect of the Apostolic Signature .

With the death of John Paul II on April 2, 2005, according to the Codex iuris canonici, his office as head of the Apostolic Signature expired . Pope Benedict XVI confirmed however shortly after his election in the conclave 2005 Vallini as prefect and accepted him in the consistory on March 24, 2006 as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry San Pier Damiani ai Monti di San Paolo in the cardinals college. During the 11th General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in October 2005, Vallini chaired the Commission for Discussions.

On June 27, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Agostino Vallini as Cardinal Vicar of the Diocese of Rome and Archpriest of the Lateran Basilica . On 24 February 2009 he was maintaining its pro hac vice to title Church gathered Title Diakonie to Cardinal priests appointed.

After the resignation of Benedict XVI. he participated in the 2013 conclave . On March 8, 2014, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the newly formed Council for Economic Affairs.

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation from both offices on May 26, 2017. On September 30, 2017, Pope Francis reappointed him as a member of the Apostolic Signature .

On November 4, 2017, the Pope made him his legate for the Basilicas of San Francesco and Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi .
