Mario Francesco Cardinal Pompedda (born April 18, 1929 in Ozieri , Sassari Province , Italy , † October 17, 2006 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Mario Francesco Pompedda was a seminarian at the Almo Collegio Capranica and received the sacrament of ordination in 1951 after studying Catholic theology and philosophy . After further studies , he did his doctorate in law and Catholic theology and also obtained a licentiate in Biblical theology . From 1955 he worked in various positions at the Court of Justice of the Vatican, the Sacra Rota Romana . Pope Paul VI Appointed him on May 8, 1969, as an auditor at the same court.

On September 13, 1993 Pope John Paul II appointed him as the successor to Archbishop Ernesto Maria Fiore as his dean and as such on November 29, 1997 as titular archbishop of Bisarcio . The Pope ordained him episcopal on January 6, 1998, and co-consecrators were Giovanni Battista Re , Substitute in the State Secretariat, and Jorge María Mejía , Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and the College of Cardinals . On November 16, 1999, he was appointed Prefect of the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature . On February 21, 2001 John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry Annunciazione della Beata Vergine Maria a Via Ardeatina in the college of cardinals. Shortly after reaching the age of 75, his resignation due to reasons of age was accepted on May 27, 2004. Pompedda was a participant in the 2005 conclave , in which Benedict XVI. was chosen. From 2003 to 2006 he was Grand Prior of the Order of Constantine .

Pompedda died on October 17, 2006 in the Gemelli Clinic in Rome.

Act

Cardinal Mario Francesco Pompedda spoke out against equating gay marriage with the legal institution of marriage . At the same time, in a newspaper interview as the former head of the Vatican Court, he recognized the need to define legal regulations in the state for homosexual couples who actually live together. Such a law could deal with property rights, pension rights and inheritance issues. With these statements, the cardinal showed the Vatican's groundbreaking pragmatic approach to homosexual couples. In the past, the Vatican had repeatedly spoken out against the legal recognition of homosexual couples.
