Camillo Cardinal Ruini (born February 19, 1931 in Sassuolo , Province of Modena , Italy ) is Cardinal Vicar Emeritus of the Diocese of Rome and Archpriest emeritus of the Basilica of St. John Lateran . He was also President of the Italian Bishops' Conference from 1991 to 2007

Life

Camillo Ruini studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University as a seminarist at the Almo Collegio Capranica . He then passed the licentiate examination and received the sacrament of ordination in 1954 .

From 1957 to 1968 he taught philosophy at the seminary of his home diocese. From 1968 to 1986 he was professor of Catholic dogmatics at the Interdiocesan Theological College of Modena-Reggio-Emilia-Carpi-Guastalla. From 1977 to 1983 he also held a teaching position for dogmatics at the Theological College of Bologna . In addition to his teaching activities, Ruini worked for several years as a student chaplain and representative for Catholic Action .

On June 29, 1983, he received episcopal ordination from the diocesan bishop, Gilberto Baroni (it) , and was appointed titular bishop of Nept and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Reggio Emilia and Guastalla . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Faenza , Francesco Tarcisio Bertozzi, and the Bishop of Palestrina , Renato Spallanzani . In this office, Ruini made great contributions to the dialogue between the Catholic Church and various social groups. In 1986 he was appointed General Secretary of the Italian Bishops' Conference by Pope John Paul II .
