Franc Cardinal Rodé CM (born September 23, 1934 in Ljubljana , Slovenia ) is a retired Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

After the end of the war in 1945, Franc Rodé and his family fled to Austria for fear of communist persecution and initially spent a year there in the Peggetz refugee camp near Lienz ( Tyrol ) and then after its dissolution over 2 years in Spittal an der Drau ( Carinthia ). In 1948 his family left Europe and emigrated to Argentina .

There he joined in 1952 in the Lazaristenorden one who him to study the Catholic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and at the Catholic University of Paris sent. In 1957, he put his final vows from and received on 29 June 1960 in Paris , the sacrament of Holy Orders . That same year he became a doctor of theology doctorate

In 1965 he became a pastor in Slovenia, where he worked until his call to Rome and the appointment of Secretary of the Secretariat for Dialogue with Non-Believers by Pope John Paul II in 1987. In 1993 he appointed him secretary of the Pontifical Council for Culture .

On March 5, 1997 he was appointed Archbishop of Ljubljana . He received the episcopal ordination through his predecessor in office, Archbishop Alojzij Šuštar , on April 6th of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Archbishops Franc Perko and Aloysius Matthew Ambrozic . Shortly afterwards he also became chairman of the Slovenian Bishops' Conference . On February 11, 2004, he was called back to Rome and appointed Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life . With the death of John Paul II on April 2, 2005, he initially lost this function according to canon law , but after his election by Benedict XVI. confirmed in office.

Pope Benedict XVI accepted him in the solemn consistory on March 24, 2006 as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry of San Francesco Saverio alla Garbatella in the college of cardinals .

Franc Cardinal Rodé, who was accepted as honorary conventual chaplain to the Slovene Association in the Order of Malta in 1997 and was appointed Grand Cross conventual chaplain as Archbishop of Ljubljana in 1999, has been Honorary and Devotional Grand Cross Bailli since May 25, 2006.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Franc Cardinal Rodé on September 19, 2008 as papal legate for the anniversary of the Cistercian Abbey of Waldsassen .

On January 4, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. to the resignation of Cardinal Franc Rodé for reasons of age from the office of Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and for Societies of Apostolic Life.

After the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. Cardinal Rodé was drawn on March 4, 2013 as assistant to the Camerlengo (as a representative of the cardinal deacons). With that he belonged to a special congregation that regulated subordinate issues during the Sedis vacancy.

Pope Francis elevated him to the rank of cardinal priest on June 20, 2016, while retaining his title seat pro hac vice .
