San Francesco Saverio alla Garbatella is a church and Title Diakonie in Roman Quarter Ostiense at Piazza Damiano Sauli.
history
The parish was founded on May 1, 1933 by Pope Pius XI. founded with the Apostolic Constitution Quo omnes sacrorum . The church was built according to a design by Alberto Calza Bini .
The parish became famous when it was the first parish visited by Pope John Paul II on December 3, 1978 . It was three months after his election and he gave the following sermon:
“It is a pleasure for me to visit you as the first Roman parish, as I have special memories with you. In the early post-war years I was a student in Rome and was here almost every Sunday to help in pastoral ministry. Some of those moments are still in my mind today, but many things have changed in the thirty years. "
On February 21, 2001, Pope John Paul II elevated the church to title diaconia.
