San Benedetto 's Church and Title Diakonie in Roman Quarter Ostiense on Via del Gazometro. To distinguish between San Benedetto and Piscinula , the addition al Gazometro is often added. As a titular diaconia, she is referred to as Benedetto fuori Porta San Paolo .

history

In 1912 Pius X wanted a church for the Ostiense district near a gasometer . Benedict XV promised to continue construction and the church was dedicated to Saint Benedict in memory of the Pope. In 1916, an old chapel was demolished and construction began. When the Pope died in 1922, only the columns and roof were finished. It was not until 1925 under the pontificate of Pius XI. the construction of the church was finished and on June 3, 1926 the parish was established with an Apostolic Constitution .

The parish is looked after by priests from the Compagnia di San Paolo and the church was made a title diaconia by Pope John Paul II on June 28, 1988 . On February 14, 1988, the same Pope visited the church.
