Jacob Cardinal Missia , originally Misel or Mislej ; (Born June 30, 1838 in Hrastje-Mota , today Slovenia ; † March 23, 1902 in Gorizia ) was a Slovenian bishop and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He was the youngest child in his family, and his older brother was also a priest . On 21 May 1850 he was received Confirmation . After initial training at the Lavant seminary ( Maribor ), he studied philosophy and theology in Rome. On April 11, 1858, he received minor orders in Rome . On May 30, 1863, he received the sacrament of ordination in Rome . There he obtained a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in August 1864 .

Jakob Missia was called to be Bishop of Laibach on November 10, 1884 . The episcopal ordination donated him on December 7, 1884 in Graz Johann Baptist Zwerger , the bishop of Seckau , co-consecrators were John Haller , Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Salzburg , and Bishop Anton Josef Grusha , chaplain of the Austrian emperor. At the suggestion of Emperor Franz Joseph I , Jakob Missia was transferred to the Archbishopric of Gorizia on March 24, 1898 . On the same day the Pope sent him the pallium .

Leo XIII. elevated him in the consistory of June 18, 1899 to cardinal with the Roman titular church of Santo Stefano Rotondo . Jakob Missia was the first Slovenian clergyman to receive the cardinalate.

He died in Gorizia in 1902 , today's Gorizia, where he found his final resting place in the cathedral.
