João Cardinal Braz de Aviz (born April 24, 1947 in Mafra , Santa Catarina , Brazil ) is a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

João Braz de Aviz was born as one of eight children to the married couple João Avelino de Aviz and Juliana Hacke de Aviz. In his childhood the family moved to Borrazópolis . On April 21, 1958, Braz de Aviz entered the boys' seminary São Pio X in Assis and then studied philosophy at the Rainha dos Apóstolos seminary in Curitiba and at the theological faculty in Palmas . From 1967 to 1972 he studied Catholic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . Braz de Aviz acquired oneLicentiate in Catholic theology. He received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Apucarana on November 26, 1972 through Bishop Romeu Alberti .

From 1973 to 1984 João Braz de Aviz was pastor in some parishes in the Apucarana diocese. He was the Regens of the Apucarana Seminary from 1984 to 1985 and of the Londrina Seminary from 1986 to 1988 . In 1989 Braz de Aviz was sent to Rome to study at the Pontifical Lateran University . In 1992 he became a dogmatic thesis for doctorate in theology doctorate . From 1991 to 1994 João Braz de Aviz was pastor at the Cathedral Nossa Senhora de Lourdes in Apucarana and professor for dogmatics at the Istituto teologico Paolo VI. in Londrina. He was also a member of the Council of Priests and the College of Consultors and coordinator for pastoral care in the Apucarana diocese.

As auxiliary bishop, João Braz de Aviz was Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Vitória and President of the Regional Bishops 'Conference of Espírito Santo, as well as a member of the Commission for the Doctrine of the Faith in the Brazilian Bishops' Conference. He was also secretary of the XIII. National Eucharistic Congress.

Pope John Paul II appointed João Braz de Aviz to be Bishop of Ponta Grossa on August 12, 1998 . The inauguration took place on October 15 of the same year. On July 17, 2002, Braz de Aviz was appointed Archbishop of Maringá . The inauguration took place on October 4th of the same year. Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Brasília on January 28, 2004 . João Braz de Aviz took up this position on March 27 of the same year. In May 2010, João Braz de Aviz organized the XVI. National Eucharistic Congress.

On January 4, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life . João Braz de Aviz took office on February 16, 2011. Pope Francis confirmed this appointment on March 29, 2014.

In the solemn consistory of February 18, 2012, Benedict XVI took him. as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Sant'Elena fuori Porta Prenestina in the college of cardinals .
