Silvestre Luís Scandián

Silvestre Luís Scandián SVD (born December 31, 1931 in Iconha ; † February 16, 2019 ) was a Brazilian religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Vitória .

Life

Silvestre Luís Scandián studied philosophy and theology at the Holy Spirit seminar of the Steyler missionaries in São Paulo . He joined the religious order of the Steyler Missionaries , made his profession on March 1, 1951 and was ordained a priest on August 3, 1958 in São Paulo . He completed a theological degree at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome (1959–1960) and studied sociology at the Faculty of Sociology and Politics of São Paulo (1964–1966). From 1961 to 1967 he was a professor at the Seminário Maior do Verbo Divino . He was pastor of Monte Alto (1968–1972) and Provincial of the Steyler Missionaries in São Paulo (1973–1974).

Pope Paul VI appointed him on January 4, 1975 Bishop of Araçuaí . The Apostolic Nuncio in Brazil , Archbishop Carmine Rocco , donated him episcopal ordination on February 22 of the following year ; Co- consecrators were Geraldo de Proença Sigaud SVD, Archbishop of Diamantina , and João Batista da Mota e Albuquerque , Archbishop of Vitória . His episcopal motto was "Virtute Spiritus Sancti".

Pope John Paul II appointed him coadjutor archbishop of Vitória on August 18, 1981 . With the death of João Batista da Mota e Albuquerque on April 27, 1984, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Vitória.

On April 14, 2004, Pope John Paul II accepted his early resignation.
