Geraldo de Proença Sigaud

Geraldo de Proença Sigaud SVD (born September 25, 1909 in Belo Horizonte , Brazil , † September 5, 1999 in Diamantina , Brazil) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Diamantina .

Life

Geraldo de Proença Sigaud joined the Congregation of the Divine Word Missionaries in and received on 12 March 1932 in Rome , the ordination . After further studies he worked as a professor for education.

Pope Pius XII appointed him on October 29, 1946 Bishop of Jacarezinho . The apostolic nuncio in Brazil and later cardinal, Archbishop Carlo Chiarlo , donated him the episcopal ordination on May 1, 1947 in São Paulo . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Bragança Paulista , José Maurício da Rocha , and the Bishop of Ribeirão Preto , Manuel da Silveira d'Elboux . On December 20, 1960 he was by Pope John XXIII. appointed Archbishop of Diamantina.

He attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council , where he joined the Coetus Internationalis Patrum . In the 1960s and 1970s he belonged to the conservative wing of the Brazilian episcopate and often took a stand against the left-wing clergy and against liberation theology . Among the Brazilian bishops, he was the sharpest opponent of Archbishop Hélder Câmara .

Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation on September 10, 1980.
