José Newton de Almeida Baptista (born October 16, 1904 in Niterói , † November 11, 2001 in Brasília ) was a Brazilian Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Brasília .

Life

Jose Newton de Almeida Baptista received on 28 October 1928, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

Pope Pius XII appointed him Bishop of Uruguaina on June 10, 1944 . The Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro , Jaime de Barros Câmara , donated him episcopal ordination on September 3 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the bishop emeritus of Espírito Santo , Benedito Paulo Alves de Souza , and the bishop of Niterói , José Pereira Alves . On January 5, 1954, he was appointed Archbishop of Diamantina .

On March 12, 1960 Pope John XXIII appointed him . the first bishop of the diocese of Brasília , established two months earlier, while retaining the personal title of archbishop. On November 9, 1963, he was also appointed military bishop of Brazil .

He participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father. With the elevation of the diocese of Brasília to the archbishopric on October 11, 1966 he became its first archbishop.

On February 15, 1984, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related renunciation of the Archdiocese of Brasília. On October 31, 1990, he also resigned as a military bishop.
