Geraldo do Espírito Santo Ávila (born April 10, 1929 in Diamantina , Brazil , † November 14, 2005 in Brasília ) was a Brazilian, Roman Catholic clergyman and military archbishop of Brazil.

Life

After studying theology , Geraldo do Espírito Santo Ávila was ordained a priest on November 29, 1953 .

On June 27, 1977 Pope Paul VI appointed him . the auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Brasília while the titular of Gemellae in Numidia . He received the episcopal ordination on September 3, 1977 by the Archbishop of Brasília , José Newton de Almeida Baptista , co- consecrators were João de Souza Lima , the auxiliary bishop of Derbe and apostolic administrator of Itacoatiara , and Geraldo de Proença Sigaud , the archbishop of Diamantina .

He was named Military Archbishop of Brazil on October 31, 1990, and was appointed to the post on December 12, 1990. On March 7, 1998, he declared that he was giving up his titular seat. From May 29, 1998 to May 19, 1999 he was Apostolic Administrator of Ipameri during the Sedis vacancy .

Archbishop Geraldo do Espírito Santo Ávila died of cancer at the age of 76 and was buried on November 16, 2005 in the military cathedral "Queen Mary of Peace". The funeral mass for him was celebrated by the Archbishop of Brasilia, João Bráz de Aviz .
