The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Niterói ( lat. : Archidioecesis Nictheroyensis ) is in Brazil located Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Niterói in the state of Rio de Janeiro .

history

The diocese of Niterói was on April 27, 1892 by Pope Leo XIII. built from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro and subordinated to this as a suffragan . On November 15, 1895, the Diocese of Niterói gave parts of its territory to the establishment of the Diocese of Espírito Santo . Further assignments of territory took place on December 4, 1922 to found the dioceses of Barra do Piraí and Campos and on April 13, 1946 to found the diocese of Petrópolis . The diocese of Niterói gave up on March 26, 1960 parts of its territory to establish the diocese of Nova Iguaçu and was raised to the archbishopric at the same time.

In 1996 Archbishop Carlos Alberto Etchandy Gimeno Navarro initiated the construction of a new cathedral in Niterói. The renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer was commissioned with the planning . After Navarro's death in 2003, his successor Alano Maria Pena closed the project. His successor José Francisco Rezende Dias took it up again in 2012.
