José Francisco Rezende Dias

José Francisco Rezende Dias (born April 2, 1956 in Brasópolis ) is a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Niterói .

Life

José Francisco Rezende Dias was ordained a priest on November 10, 1979 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him on March 28, 2001 auxiliary bishop in Pouso Alegre and titular bishop of Turres Ammeniae . The Archbishop of Pouso Alegre, Ricardo Pedro Chaves Pinto Filho OPraem , gave him episcopal ordination on June 2nd of the same year ; Co - consecrators were Walmor Oliveira de Azevedo , auxiliary bishop in São Salvador da Bahia , and Pedro Luiz Stringhini , auxiliary bishop in São Paulo . As a motto he chose IN LIBERTATEM VOCATI ESTIS .

On March 30, 2005, he was appointed Bishop of Duque de Caxias . Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on November 30, 2011 Archbishop of Niterói . As a new motto he chose VIVAMOS POR ELE (“Through him we live”, 1 Jn 4,9  EU ).

Archbishop Dias resumed the project of a new cathedral based on plans by the renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907–2012), initiated in 1996 by his predecessor Carlos Alberto Etchandy Gimeno Navarro and closed by his successor Alano Maria Pena .
