history

Cathedral of St. John the Baptist Old Cathedral

With the establishment of the Diocese of Niterói in 1892, the main parish church of São João Batista was elevated to a cathedral . Instead of smaller previous buildings, it was built in the classicist style between 1842 and 1854 .

The increase in population in the greater Rio de Janeiro area and the elevation of Niteróis to an archbishopric in 1960 led to long-term considerations for a new cathedral, as the old cathedral could not be expanded due to its location and its historical architecture. Archbishop Carlos Alberto Etchandy Gimeno Navarro finally suggested the current new building project in 1996.

The new cathedral should meet the needs of the church, but also form the final highlight of the Caminho Niemeyer ("Niemeyer-Weg"), a series of sophisticated buildings by the renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907–2012) on the Atlantic shore of Niterói ( Guanabara Bay ), starting with the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói . Niemeyer, who u. a. 1958-1970 had built the Cathedral of Brasília , called the cathedral project of Niterói in view of the location and context of the other buildings as his obra-prima ("masterpiece").

Pope John Paul II blessed the foundation stone of the new cathedral during his 1997 visit to Rio de Janeiro. Christmas 1999, the foundation stone during a major celebration for the opening of was the Holy year 2000 at its destination laid down .

The construction project is supported by the state, but is controversial because of its dimensions and its costs. Archbishop Navarro's successor, Alano Maria Pena , had it stopped in 2003. His successor José Francisco Rezende Dias took it up again in 2012.

architecture

The architectural design combines a flat-domed hall 60 m in diameter with an open, three-arched triangular superstructure 70 m high. The shape of the hall is interpreted as the “main”, the superstructure as a miter and at the same time as a symbol of the Trinity . The building complex also includes an event and exhibition center and a library. The outdoor area offers space for large events with up to 15,000 participants.
