Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói
The Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói (MAC) is a museum for contemporary art in the Brazilian city of Niterói in close proximity to Rio de Janeiro .
The building, designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer with the help of the engineer Bruno Contarini, was completed in 1996 after five years of construction. Directly on the coast above a rock, the cylindrical base, nine meters in diameter, stands in a likewise cylindrical water basin. The actual building resting on it is 16 m high and 50 m in diameter and its shape is reminiscent of the base of a mushroom cloud or a UFO . A large ramp with red flooring winds its way to the entrance area on the first floor of the building. The museum, which is four floors high and has a space of 2,500 m², is equipped with exhibition areas and galleries, but also with a restaurant and an auditorium. The windows mounted at an angle of 40 ° offer a view of Rio de Janeiro, whose landmark the Sugar Loaf Mountain , as well as the bay of Guanabara and Niterói itself.

The holdings of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Niterói today include the João Sattamini collection, comprising around 1,200 works, and the much smaller MAC collection of around 370 works of art, most of which were donated by artists who were exhibited in the museum.
