Carlos Alberto Etchandy Gimeno Navarro (born October 30, 1931 in Engenho Novo ; † February 2, 2003 ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Niterói .

Life

Carlos Alberto Etchandy Gimeno Navarro was ordained a priest on June 29, 1959 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on October 24, 1975 auxiliary bishop in São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro and titular bishop of Cenae . The Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, Cardinal Eugênio de Araújo Sales , donated him episcopal ordination on December 12 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were José Alberto Lopes de Castro Pinto , auxiliary bishop in São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, and Joseph Hasler , bishop of Saint Gallen . As a motto he chose CUM MARIA MATRE JESU .

The Pope appointed him Bishop of Campos on August 29, 1981 . Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Niterói on May 9, 1990 .

In 1996 Archbishop Navarro initiated the construction of a new cathedral in Niterói. The renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer was commissioned with the planning . After Navarro's death in 2003, his successor Alano Maria Pena closed the project. His successor José Francisco Rezende Dias took it up again in 2012.
