The Hamburg-Poppenbüttel station is the terminus of the Alstertalbahn and today serves as the start and end station of the S1 and S11 lines of the Hamburg S-Bahn .

The train station is located in Hamburg-Poppenbüttel, east of the Alstertal shopping center . Access to the train station is possible from Wentzelplatz or Stormarnplatz. The address of the train station is Stormarnplatz 1.

history

The station was built in the course of the construction of the Alstertalbahn, which was built from 1913 as an extension of the Hamburg-Altona connecting line from Ohlsdorf to Poppenbüttel. The Alstertal Terrain AG (ATAG) initially planned to build a standard gauge route via Wellingsbuettel after Wohldorf . Later considerations envisaged a wing station in Poppenbüttel, from which branch lines to Wohldorf and Volksdorf should depart. The Hamburg Senate rejected this, however, because it wanted to avoid competition with the Walddörferbahn . ATAG only received approval for the construction of the line after it had agreed not to extend the line beyond Poppenbüttel.

From 1917 the route was used for freight traffic; from January 1918 passenger traffic was also taken up. At the time, there were several freight tracks at the station in Poppenbüttel, which have now been dismantled after freight traffic was discontinued in the early 1990s. In 1963 an automatic washing system was built in the area of ​​the sidings. In the mid-1980s, the electromechanical signal box was relocated to a new building in the middle of the platform.

From 2011 to 2013 the station was renovated and redesigned to be barrier-free.

Furnishing

The station has a covered central platform and a station building. Access to the platform is via a bridge that spans the tracks south of the station and connects Wentzelplatz with Stormarnplatz. Access to the platforms is barrier-free.

There is a bus station at Wentzelplatz, which is served by Metrobus line 24. Bus routes 174, 176, 178, 179, 276, 374 and night bus routes 607 and 627 also stop here. This bus transfer stop received the award plaque “Building of the Year” for 2009 from the Hamburg Architects and Engineers Association . The bus station was not finally completed until 2014 when the elevator went into operation. In March 2016, the bus system was voted third among the best-designed bus stations in the world and has thus prevailed against hundreds of international competitors.

After almost two years of construction, the new Park + Ride and Bike + Ride facility at the S-Bahn station at Stormarnplatz was officially opened on October 1, 2016 .
There is another bus stop at Stormarnplatz (Metrobus line 8).

To the north of the platform there are seven sidings as well as a S-Bahn plant that cleans the inside and outside of the trains.

Poppenbüttel station is the start and end station of the S-Bahn lines S1 and S11 between Poppenbüttel and Wedel or Blankenese. On the section between Poppenbüttel and Ohlsdorf, the trains run as short trains; In Ohlsdorf, the wing is made with another short train that serves the section between Ohlsdorf and Hamburg Airport. The trains usually turn in the opposite direction at the platforms.
